SDI PhD students can choose from central as well as specific offers in three categories:

• scientific program
• mentoring program
• softskill training program

The study program will be given in English to develop and attract an international community. International renowned guest researchers will be invited for summer schools, international symposia and seminars provided for the PhD students. For the successful completion of the PhD program, after three years the PhD student must have finalised the PhD thesis, must have given the disputation and must have acquired 180 credit points (including the PhD thesis). 
This includes obligatory lectures and seminars, project-related courses like e.g. method courses, congresses, scientific colloquia and interdisciplinary seminars like e.g. soft skill courses. Students can choose from a great variety of courses, workshops, summer schools, Master classes etc.

Most important is, of course, the research project in one of the departments of the University of Hamburg or partner institutes. All projects are quality-checked by the program committees.  The PhD advisory Committee (PaC) consists of the PhD supervisor and a minimum of two additional internal and external experts. Each student has a thesis advisory committee and regular meetings take place. Presentation and discussion of the project on an annual retreat should guarantee the way to success. Short-time stays abroad in a lab of a cooperation partner are possible.
